I would like to begin with a couple of reminders for you. There will be NO Enrichment this Friday as Fall Enrichment is over. Students must be properly dressed for the weather. If there is snow on the ground, students are limited to playing on the boardwalks if they are not wearing snow pants and boots. All students should bring a coat/jacket and a water bottle to school every day. Thank you.
The kids have been telling people there is a class ballet but they are exaggerating a bit in their excitement over this Nutcracker unit. Some of the kids have been practicing some of their own dances at recess and want to put on a little act. This is not in any way a designated class or school activity, rather something very cute and entirely child directed. The kids are planning to put on their "show" at recess for any of their friends or family who want to see it. It is not a school assembly and VERY informal. I am giving them use of my classroom on Thursday during lunch recess from 12:30-1.
This week in ELA we are learning about compound words, verbs (for past, present, and future), cause and effect, and folk tales. In Math we took our Unit 3 quiz today and we will be starting a unit on money and subtraction. In Heath we are learning about following rules for safety. In Science we are learning about water and how things survive in a pond. In Social Studies we are learning about technology and how goods are made and brought to us. We are continuing to study The Nutcracker Ballet through a variety of cross curricular activities.

Writing Prompt
The theme of Unit 3 is “What does it mean to be creative?”. The question of the week is “How can creative thinking solve a problem?”. In Anansi Goes Fishing, a spider learns from a turtle. Please help your child think about how creative thinking can solve a problem. Now have them write a folktale in which an animal with a creative idea solves a problem. Please have your child write 4-6 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
Features of Folk Tales
* A folk tale is a story that has been passed down from one generation to another.
* Good characters are usually rewarded and evil characters are usually punished.
* Some folk tales try to explain how something in nature came to be.
* Folk tales often have a happy ending.
CCSS Writing 3- Write narratives in which they recount a well elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. (This is not a separate assignment, it is a description of the standard the above writing prompt meets.)
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Thanks so much!
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
