I just want to send a quick reminder to make sure you have sent in permission slips and payment for the field trip to see Wonderheads next Wednesday in Tahoe City. Every Thursday at Creekside we will be having a school spirit day. This week's theme will be twin day. This is strictly for fun and not required by any means. Please see the weekly Creekside Chat to stay updated on school spirit days and other important information. This week in ELA we are learning about subjects and predicates, consonant blends, main ideas, and realistic fiction. In Math we are working with basic addition and subtraction problems, math mountains, and word problems. The kids have been doing well with this so far in class. I did notice last week that some of the kids should review some basic math facts. Please help them practice counting by 2, 5, and 10 at home as well as practice knowing their math doubles. (ex- 1+1=2, 2+2=4, and so on.) This will be a great help to them as we continue to work on math all year. In Science we are learning about what living things need to survive and in Health we are talking about food groups and healthy eating. In Social Studies we are learning about how communities can be different. We are also learning about Vincent Van Gogh and his famous painting, Starry Night. We hope to have some amazing art to share with you at Back to School Night. The question of the week is “ What can we discover by exploring nature?”. This week we are reading Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night, a story about a family camping experience. Please help your child think about things that can be discovered in nature. Now have them write a realistic story about a child who discovers something outdoors. Please have your child write 3-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you. CCSS Writing 3- Write narratives in which they recount a well elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. I have a few reminders for you this week. Picture day for the 2nd grade class is tomorrow, Tuesday 9/9. Please send in your picture orders if you haven't already. There is a field trip permission slip in the homework packets. We are trying to attend a Wonderheads Theatre performance at North Tahoe High School on Wednesday 9/24. All permission slips should be sent in ASAP (next Monday, at the latest) and WE NEED DRIVERS/CHAPERONES! We will be leaving campus at 9 am and returning about 11:30. All drivers need to have their information (CDL, insurance, livescan) on file in the office. Please email me if you are able to help us out. Thank you! Finally, there is a notice from the PTO regarding a school directory, be sure to look for it in the homework packet. A quick note about homework: I highly suggest that people spread out the homework over the week whenever possible. The math is review work of the material we worked on the week before and the ELA is to reinforce what we are learning this week in class. I generally do not send home Science and Social Studies homework unless we are working on a special project. The homework packet also includes IS for Friday as that is 20% of our school week. If you feel there is too much work for your student at this time, just go ahead and have him/her do perhaps only one side of each Math worksheet so he/she can still get a review in. The Family Times page for ELA is not intended as homework, it is for the parents to get an idea of what we are working on in class. A quick note about Math Mountains: A math mountain has the total (highest number) at the top and the addends on the bottom. It is designed to show the relationships between addition and subtraction. For example: 9 / / 5 4 thus the possible equations are 9-5=4, 9-4=5, 5+4=9, 4+5=9 I hope this information is helpful to you. :) This week in ELA we are working with long vowel sounds, the short -e sound, main ideas, and author's purpose. We will also be talking about informative/expository texts. In Math we are working with odd and even numbers, adding doubles (2+2=4, 3+3=6, etc), and Math Mountains (see above). In Social Studies we are studying how communities can be different and in Science we will be talking about different kinds of living things. In Health we will be talking about movement and energy expenditure when exercising. The question of the week is “What can we learn about exploring space?”. This week we are reading Exploring Space with an Astronaut, a story in which we find out about daily life on a space shuttle. Help your child think about what scientists have learned from exploring space. Now have them write an expository paragraph telling about what they have learned. (Expository nonfiction tells about real places, people, or events.) Please have your child write 3-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you. CCSS Writing 2- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. It is hard to believe we are already in our second week of school! The kids and I are getting to know one another and we are having fun learning together. Please remember to check the school website weekly and be sure to read Ms. Gillian's Creekside Chats to stay informed. I want to be sure to remind you all that the 2nd grade picture day will be Tuesday, September 9th. A picture order form was sent home in the homework packets today. Please fill them out and return them to me with a check as soon as possible. I am also happy to announce that we have found a Spanish teacher for Creekside! Mr. Eric will be with our class on Mondays and Wednesdays, tomorrow will be our first day of Spanish. Exciting stuff! Just FYI, I will send homework packets home on Mondays, they are due the following Monday. This week we are getting right into our curriculum for the year. In ELA we are working with phonics, reading comprehension, character and setting, and realistic fiction. We are also beginning to practice our spelling words. Spelling tests on the spelling words from the previous week will be on Mondays. (For example- the words from this week's list will be tested next Monday.) In Math we are working with addition and subtracting using Math Mountains. (A Math Mountain is a visual representation of the partners and totals of a number. The total (sum) appears at the top and the two partners (addends) that are added to produce the larger number are below to the left and right.) In Social Studies we are learning about what makes a community and in Science we are learning about different kinds of living things.
