Hello Creekside Families,
Just a reminder as Valentine's Day approaches that candy is NOT allowed at school. Students are welcome to exchange valentines but they should be sure to bring one for everyone. There are 22 students in our class. We will be having a little celebration and valentine exchange on the morning of Thursday, February 11th. Please send in healthy snacks to share if you are able. This week, the 2nd graders will also be observing the Random Acts of Kindness week. We will be doing good deeds all over the school! We are also collecting unopened food, treats, and toys for the cats and dogs at the Humane Society in Truckee. Last, but not least, we will be attending an assembly this Thursday (1:15) at OVI. It will be our monthly/LP award ceremony followed by attending the Air Band/Mock Rock competition by the students of SVP. It should be lots of fun! This week in ELA we are wrapping up our unit on Informational Writing: Lab reports, learning about how to find the character's point of view in a story, and working on spelling patterns. In Math we are working on measuring with different units. In Science we are talking about the Earth's water, natural resources, and working in our interactive notebooks. In Social Studies we are learning about American cultures. In Health we are learning how to prevent diseases. Report cards are being sent home today in sealed envelopes, please be sure to check in with your child and rescue them from soggy backpacks! As a reminder, there is a 4 point scale used for grading at Creekside. Before reviewing the report card, please know that I complete each report card with thoughtfulness and consideration of your child's individual strengths and growth. At this point in the school year you should expect to see mostly 2's on your child's report card. A 2 represents grade-level for mid-year and age appropriate work while 3's are given when they have reached mastery of 2nd grade standards. 4's only appear when your child is regularly working beyond grade level. Some scores (such as geometry) appear lower on the report cards. This does not mean that your student struggles in that area but rather that we have just begun working on those standards in class. Parent-teacher conferences will take place the week of March 28th. If you have an urgent question regarding your child's report card that cannot wait until March, please email me and we can set up a meeting time. Thank you! This Wednesday and Thursday, we will be taking our mid-year iReady tests in the morning before lunch. If your student will not be at school during those windows of time, please have them log on to their iReady account at home and take the English and Math tests at home. The testing window closes the week of February 22nd. Thank you! Please mark your calendars...Thursday, March 17th is an IS day for Creekside. The entire staff will be attending professional development in the form of a Math seminar that day. Rideout RAP is offering a full day with them in Tahoe City for homework help, play time, and various activities. Contact them directly. This week in ELA we are working with writing to inform, parts of a story, and possessive nouns. In Math we are continuing to work with measurement. In Science we are talking about land. In Social Studies we are learning about American symbols. In Health we are talking about taking care of our teeth.
