We are off to a great start this year! I am proud to report that the kids have all been kind to one another and are doing well as we review first grade content this week. They are a really fun group of kids! Mark your calendars! There will be NO SCHOOL next Monday, September 5th as we observe Labor Day. There is no official homework this week although the students should spend 20 minutes reading every night.
Homework packets will begin next week. I send them home on Monday (or Tuesday if we don't have school on Monday) and they are due back on the following Monday. Included in the homework packets is IS (independent study) work for Friday. The weekly spelling list will also be sent home in the packet and spelling tests are given on Mondays. We will cover this in more detail at Back to School Night.
This week in ELA we learning about story elements and key details in a text. Our Rooted in Reading text is The Invisible Boy, a story about a boy who often goes unnoticed until he meets a new friend. We have several writing and grammar activities based upon the book this week. In Math we have been working with fact families and basic math facts. In Science we are learning all about bees and we also completed a cool STEM activity in groups. For Social Studies and Health activities this week, we have read and discussed several books about making friends, being kind, and building a supportive community of learners.
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Thanks so much!
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
