Welcome 2nd Grade Families!
I am very excited to start a new school year with you and your wonderful children! I had so much fun last year getting to know them a little bit on campus and during our shared field trips. What a great group I will have! I wanted to send you this welcome letter and some information that you should find helpful as we begin the school year together. Our first day of school will be next Monday, August 31st. Our school day is 8:30- 2:45. You will find a classroom supplies list and important upcoming dates at the end of this email. Please take the time to read through this entire email, I apologize for it being so long. Thank you! ORIENTATION- 2nd grade orientation will be held in my classroom at 8:30 am. The orientation includes signing master agreements, and going over some introductory information. If you are interested in being a driver, a chaperone for field trips, or a volunteer this year, Creekside/SVP needs a LiveScan fingerprint report on file. The form to bring to the sheriff’s station can be found on the school website at www.creeksidecooperative.org. Parents must have fingerprints on file in order to drive on field trips or chaperone, or to volunteer in the classroom or at Enrichment. If you have been fingerprinted with Creekside already, you do not need to go through this process again. Also, a copy of your current auto insurance and a copy of your driver’s license must be on file with Lynn in the office. You can either bring a copy with you, or make a copy for our files at Orientation. Note that parents who have driven in prior years still need current insurance and license information on file. If your information has changed or expired, please bring or make an updated copy. IS/LEARNING CONFERENCES- As you know, we are an Independent Study (IS) school. Mandatory Learning Conferences are held approximately every 20 classroom days. You are required to attend all meetings in order to sign paperwork and receive up to date information about our school. If you are unable to attend, you must make arrangements with me prior to the meeting. As an IS school, students are on campus 4 days a week. The 5th day (Friday) is an IS school day, and must meet Creekside's IS requirements given by the state. IS Friday allows Creekside to fill academic state requirements, and just as importantly, it keeps your students prepared and excelling across the curriculum! In our classroom, Homework packets include Friday IS work and are due on Mondays. As a parent in our charter, you understand that you are responsible for monitoring, teaching and guiding your student for the 20% of our year that is Independent Study. Therefore, homework packets must be followed, completed, corrected, and retaught when necessary. I encourage you, as the IS teacher, to write notes on the homework packets as needed. HOMEWORK- I believe that children should have plenty of time to socialize, play, and enjoy family time in the evenings. I strongly suggest that your student spread out the homework over the course of the week rather than leave it all for Sunday night. When children have the chance to practice using their new skills, their learning is reinforced and this helps the child in their development. Spelling words will be included in the weekly homework packet, in the weekly memo that I email to you, and posted on the class website. Your child should practice these words throughout the week to prepare for the quiz each Monday. Nightly reading is also a requirement that I think is critical at this stage. The reading can be a combination of parent and student reading together or just the student reading alone. The work which is sent home every Monday is independent study practice. It is to be completed along with any enrichment activities in which your child participates. All homework should be checked for errors at home so that corrections can be made while the work is still fresh in your child’s mind. COMMUNICATION- I send out weekly emails on Mondays. (I also upload them to our classroom website.) They include our areas of study, spelling words, and homework packet instructions for the week. Please take the time to read them and stay informed. I also have a classroom website at http://jennysclass.weebly.com. Along with our classroom website, check out our school website at http://www.creeksidecooperative.org/ and our PTO website at http://creeksidepto.org/. *More information will be shared at our Back to School Night. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. HELPFUL TIPS- Last but not least, here are a few tips to help you support your learner on a daily basis. Class begins at 8:30 and our class door opens at 8:25am, please make every effort to help your child arrive on time. We begin promptly and utilize every moment of our day. Also, please make sure that your child is prepared to start their day without interruption - healthy breakfasts, snacks, lunches, full water bottles, and forecast appropriate dress (including pre-applied sunscreen) are essential. Finally, if your student is having a rough morning, please feel free to share any information that would help me support them throughout the day. Again, I warmly welcome you and your student to 2nd grade! Your positive energy and commitment to the school are the glue that holds us together. We can achieve anything if we work as a team! Thank you.
