We are all set to have lots of fun studying the Nutcracker over the next couple of weeks. Some of you may have noticed your children dancing around home. We watched the ballet during rainy day recess last week and the kids were entranced! Soon they began to assign themselves roles and practiced dancing around the classroom, they have been dancing on the playground as well. How cute! Please let me know if any of you have ordered books from Scholastic, there seems to be a few hiccups with the order from October. Thank you.
This week in ELA we are working with learning words with the long o sound (-o, -oa, -ow), verbs with singular and plural nouns, drawing conclusions, and writing friendly letters. In Math we are working with measurement and shapes. We will have a Unit 3 quiz on these next week. In Health we are learning about protective headgear as well as how to tame bullies. (This aligns nicely with the Superflex assembly on bullying that we attended today.) In Science we are learning about the Earth and how things survive in the desert. In Social Studies we are learning about history and time as well as how goods are made and brought to us.
Our special project over the next two weeks will be a unit of study on The Nutcracker. Throughout this unit of study we learn story elements, compare and contrast, listen to Tchaikovsky's amazing score, watch a video of the ballet, create art for our story board, and more.

Writing Prompt
The theme of Unit 3 is “What does it mean to be creative?”. The question of the week is “In what creative ways do we communicate?”. In Dear Juno, a boy and his grandmother exchange friendly letters. Please help your child think about the different ways people communicate. Now have them write a friendly letter about a new way they have learned to communicate. Please have your child write 4-6 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
Features of a Friendly Letter
A friendly letter includes the date, a salutation or greeting, a body, a closing, and a signature.
CCSS Writing 4- With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. (This is not a separate assignment, it is a description of the standard the above writing prompt meets.)
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Thanks so much!
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
