I'd like to start off this memo by reminding you to read the snippet every Monday to stay up date on our school and the upcoming Souper Bowl on Sunday, May 4th at 1:30 pm at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach. The link is here: http://media.wix.com/ugd/77f062_d6167f78d7924453a8a96ed8b6df519d.pdf. I'd also like to remind you that Spring Conferences will be the week of March 24th. The sign up sheet is on the door in our classroom, please be sure to sign up. School will get out at 12 noon all that week. Miss Camille asked me to let you know that there will be NO homework club from 12- 2:30, so please be sure to make arrangements to pick up your child by noon as there will be no supervision available for them. Thank you.
This week in ELA we are working with prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, dis-, over-) and singular and plural pronouns. We are also working with steps in a process, graphic organizers, and realistic fiction. In Math we are working with adding 3-digit numbers that have totals up to 1,000. Students begin the unit by learning to count to 1,000. They count by ones from a number, over the hundred, and into the next hundred. For example, 498, 499, 500, 501, 502, 503. You can help your child practice counting aloud to 1,000. Listen carefully as he or she crosses over the hundred. Students will also learn to write numbers to 1,000 and practice grouping objects in groups of 10 or 100. You can do this at home too, when the groups are made, help your child write the number of objects. This is a good way to help children recognize the difference between 5,003 and 503. In Science we are learning about Energy and in Social Studies we are learning about Resources and Choices.

Unit 5 explores “What does it mean to be responsible?”. The question of the week is “How can we be responsible community members?”. This week we are reading Carl the Complainer, a story about a boy who learns how to use local government to make his community a better place to live. Please help your child think about ways that they can contribute to their community. Remind your child use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
CCSSS Writing 3- Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
CCCS Writing 5- With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.
The stomach flu has been making the rounds at school, please keep your student at home if they are not feeling well. We are being extra careful at school about keeping our desks clean and washing our hands often. Hopefully we can all stay as healthy as possible throughout this upcoming flu season.
I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. Thank you all for your cooperation in these matters.
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
PS- Just a brief reminder about the use of electronics from home at Creekside:
This is an excerpt from Creekside's 2013/14 Student-Parent Handbook:
Personal Electronic Devices
To prevent disruptions and also to prevent loss and/or theft of personal property, no personal electronic devices are to be used on school grounds by students or parent volunteers without specific permission. Students bringing personal property to school do so at their own risk. Damaged or stolen personal property are the responsibilities of the owner. This includes, but is not limited to radios, CD players, cell phones, iPods, iPads, Kindles, cameras and laser pens. Any unauthorized equipment used at school will be confiscated, and parents will need to retrieve them. Students may also have a behavioral consequence. Parent volunteers are asked to turn off their cell phones and pagers or, better yet, leave them in the car before coming in to the classroom or the play area to help. This models appropriate choices and tells the students and teachers that you are there 100% for them!
