I have a few reminders for you this week. Picture day for the 2nd grade class is tomorrow, Tuesday 9/9. Please send in your picture orders if you haven't already. There is a field trip permission slip in the homework packets. We are trying to attend a Wonderheads Theatre performance at North Tahoe High School on Wednesday 9/24. All permission slips should be sent in ASAP (next Monday, at the latest) and WE NEED DRIVERS/CHAPERONES! We will be leaving campus at 9 am and returning about 11:30. All drivers need to have their information (CDL, insurance, livescan) on file in the office. Please email me if you are able to help us out. Thank you! Finally, there is a notice from the PTO regarding a school directory, be sure to look for it in the homework packet.
A quick note about homework: I highly suggest that people spread out the homework over the week whenever possible. The math is review work of the material we worked on the week before and the ELA is to reinforce what we are learning this week in class. I generally do not send home Science and Social Studies homework unless we are working on a special project. The homework packet also includes IS for Friday as that is 20% of our school week. If you feel there is too much work for your student at this time, just go ahead and have him/her do perhaps only one side of each Math worksheet so he/she can still get a review in. The Family Times page for ELA is not intended as homework, it is for the parents to get an idea of what we are working on in class.
A quick note about Math Mountains: A math mountain has the total (highest number) at the top and the addends on the bottom. It is designed to show the relationships between addition and subtraction.
For example:
9
/ /
5 4 thus the possible equations are 9-5=4, 9-4=5, 5+4=9, 4+5=9
I hope this information is helpful to you. :)
This week in ELA we are working with long vowel sounds, the short -e sound, main ideas, and author's purpose. We will also be talking about informative/expository texts. In Math we are working with odd and even numbers, adding doubles (2+2=4, 3+3=6, etc), and Math Mountains (see above). In Social Studies we are studying how communities can be different and in Science we will be talking about different kinds of living things. In Health we will be talking about movement and energy expenditure when exercising.

Writing Assignment
The theme of Unit 1 is “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?”. The question of the week is “What can we learn about exploring space?”. This week we are reading Exploring Space with an Astronaut, a story in which we find out about daily life on a space shuttle. Help your child think about what scientists have learned from exploring space. Now have them write an expository paragraph telling about what they have learned. (Expository nonfiction tells about real places, people, or events.) Please have your child write 3-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
CCSS Writing 2- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Thanks so much!
> Have a great week!
