I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend! The kids sure had fun stories to tell today during our morning meeting! Mark your calendars, next Tuesday, September 13th, will be our Back to School Night from 5-6:30. Please see Jeff's weekly memo for more information. Also, the weekly homework packet, as well as some Enrichment information, is being sent home today. The homework packet is due next Monday (the same day as our first spelling test!). I suggest you have your student do a little work on their packet each night. The math homework is a review from the previous week and the ELA homework is aligned with what we are doing in class this week. Thank you!
This week in ELA we are learning how to find the main topic in a text as well as learning how to give a summary of the story. Our spelling list this week focuses on words with short vowels. Our Rooted in Reading this week is designed around the book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. We will have all sorts of grammar, literature, and art projects around this story. In Math we are working with fact families and one-step word problems. In Science we are learning about how scientists learn by observing and doing. In Social Studies we are learning about our flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. We are also learning about Vincent Van Gogh and will be starting a special art project over the next week or so.

Writing Assignment
This week’s writing prompt is for your child to write about their summer. Did they travel? Did they visit with their family? Did they do anything special? Please have your child write 3-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Thanks so much!
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
