I hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend! I did! :) I wanted to let you all know how much I am enjoying this year's class, they are so wonderful! Kind, fun, and eager to learn, you should all be so proud of them! :) IMPORTANT DATES: Monday, 9/11 at 5:30 pm will be Back to School Night (adults only). Wednesday, September 13th will be the 2nd grade picture day. Please send in your picture order forms ASAP. Thank you!
This week I have sent home our first homework/practice packet. They go home on Mondays and are due back on the following Monday. Spelling tests are also on Mondays. In the homework/practice packet you will find the spelling list, a writing prompt, a short story with questions to answer (from this week's Ready chapter), a few math sheets (reviewing last week's Ready math work), and a reading log. Please encourage your student to read every night for 20 minutes and to gradually work on the packet over the course of the week. The packet includes the IS for Friday's academic engagement. Doing all of the packet at once is a challenge for most students. If your child has a hard time with any of the work, please write me a note on the front page of the packet so I can review that work with them in class. I will talk more about homework/practice packets at our Back to School Night next Monday at 5:30. I hope to see you all there.
This week in ELA we are working on finding the main topic, summarizing, and how to alphabetize words. In Math we are working with 1-step word problems and doing some Magic of Math addition strategies in our math notebooks. In Science we are learning about what living things need. In Social Studies we are learning about being responsible. In Health we are learning about body parts and movement. Our Rooted in Reading book this week is A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. We will be working on all sorts of reading, writing, grammar, and art activities around this book all week long. We will also begin learning about Van Gogh's famous Starry Night painting.

Writing Assignment
This week’s writing prompt is for your child to write about their summer. Did they travel? Did they visit with their family? Did they do anything special? Please have your child write 3-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
(CCSS Writing 3- Write narratives in which they recount a well elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.)
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Just a refresher on our illness policy: If your child is sick, he or she must be fever free and free of vomiting for 24 hours before they may return to school. Thanks!
Have a great week!
Jenny
