It is hard to believe we are already in our second week of school! The kids and I are getting to know one another and we are having fun learning together. Please remember to check the school website weekly and be sure to read Ms. Gillian's Creekside Chats to stay informed. I want to be sure to remind you all that the 2nd grade picture day will be Tuesday, September 9th. A picture order form was sent home in the homework packets today. Please fill them out and return them to me with a check as soon as possible. I am also happy to announce that we have found a Spanish teacher for Creekside! Mr. Eric will be with our class on Mondays and Wednesdays, tomorrow will be our first day of Spanish. Exciting stuff! Just FYI, I will send homework packets home on Mondays, they are due the following Monday.
This week we are getting right into our curriculum for the year. In ELA we are working with phonics, reading comprehension, character and setting, and realistic fiction. We are also beginning to practice our spelling words. Spelling tests on the spelling words from the previous week will be on Mondays. (For example- the words from this week's list will be tested next Monday.) In Math we are working with addition and subtracting using Math Mountains. (A Math Mountain is a visual representation of the partners and totals of a number. The total (sum) appears at the top and the two partners (addends) that are added to produce the larger number are below to the left and right.) In Social Studies we are learning about what makes a community and in Science we are learning about different kinds of living things.

Writing Assignment
The theme of Unit 1 is “What can we learn from exploring new places and things?”. The question of the week is “ What can we learn about exploring different communities?”. This week we are reading The Twin Club, a story about two cousins who spend the summer on their grandmother’s farm. Please help your child think about what they could learn by exploring a new place. Now have them write a realistic story about a child going to a new place. Please have your child write 3-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
CCSS Writing 3- Write narratives in which they recount a well elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
In closing, I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Thanks so much!
> Have a great week!
