I hope you all had a lovely weekend. I'd like to start off this memo by reminding you to read the snippet every Monday to stay up date on our school and the upcoming Souper Bowl on Sunday, May 4th at 1:30 pm at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach. The link is here: http://media.wix.com/ugd/77f062_d6167f78d7924453a8a96ed8b6df519d.pdf. I'd also like to remind you that Spring Conferences will be the week of March 24th. The sign up sheet is on the door in our classroom, please be sure to sign up. School will get out at 12 noon all that week.
This week in ELA, we are reviewing Unit 4 and gearing up for our Unit 4 Spelling Test next week. We have had great success using flash cards for learning our spelling words. The kids make them in class and put them in their backpacks to study at home. There is no writing prompt this week as I am sending home more ELA worksheets than usual as a result of the Unit 4 review. They are all review sheets so they should not be too time consuming. In Math we are working with reading and solving problems using graphs. We also also reviewing how to tell time. In Social Studies we are learning about people who make a difference, specifically scientists and inventors, which leads nicely into our Science activity below.
In Science we will be learning about scientists and inventors. The children will be brainstorming an idea for an invention of their own that they will make at home and present to the class next week. The presentation may be in the form of a model, poster board, color drawing, etc... The invention should be something to improve the lives of others or the world. It can be something to help the environment, a medical device, a special machine, etc... It should NOT be a candy machine, video game, or something solely for entertainment. They should be prepared to tell us how their invention would work, what it should do, and why they were inspired to invent it. The homework assignments are due on Monday, March 17th. Thank you!

* I have been informed that the CA Department of Health has issued a statewide severe influenza alert, please keep your student home from school if they are not feeling well. We are being extra careful at school about keeping our desks clean and washing our hands often. Hopefully we can all stay as healthy as possible throughout this upcoming flu season.
I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the winter weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. Thank you all for your cooperation in these matters.
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
