Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break. It was great to be back in class today and the kids did really well considering how long they had been gone from school. It was sweet to see how happy they all were to be back together again!
This week in ELA we are working with the long-i sound (spelled i, ie, igh, y). We continue to work with theme and plot and we are learning to state and justify predictions. We are also working with compound words and realistic fiction. In Math we are wrapping up Unit 2 and we will have a quiz at the end of the week. We will be spending the week reviewing measurement and shapes. The math sheets in the homework packet will also help them review so you may wish to have them work on the math assignments earlier in the week. In Science we are studying families and what living things need to survive. In Social Studies we are studying communities and how they are affected by their location and climate.
Writing Prompt
This week we are reading Rosa and Blanca. Rosa and Blanca are two sisters who have a creative idea. Please help your child think about a creative idea that could lead to a surprise. Now have your child write a creative story about a character whose creative idea leads to a surprise. Please have your child write 5-7 sentences in their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.

* I have been informed that the CA Department of Health has issued a statewide severe influenza alert, please keep your student home from school if they are not feeling well. We are being extra careful at school about keeping our desks clean and washing our hands often. Hopefully we can all stay as healthy as possible throughout this upcoming flu season.
I'd also like to remind you that students should be appropriately dressed for the winter weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. Thank you all for your cooperation in these matters.
Have a great week!
Miss Jenny
