As I mentioned in my last memo, the 2nd grade is taking the iReady Math and Reading assessments this week. Personal headphones are encouraged, however we do have sets here. Plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast each day are helpful. Also, if your child has a favorite book to read when done with testing, they are welcome to bring it in to read as other students finish up their assessments. Please do NOT send in toys with your students this week as they tend to cause a distraction in class. The iReady assessments take several hours to complete and will be split up over the course of several days. They are intended to help us direct our instruction in the classroom, track learning progress, and also create a personalized learning program for your student to use at home as part of the weekly homework/IS. We will look over your student's iReady results at our Fall Conferences in October. Thanks you!
This week in ELA we are describing connections between steps, using mental imagery while reading poetry, and learning about adjectives. In Math we are adding using arrays. In Science we are learning about animal groups. In Social Studies we are learning about history and time. In Health we are learning about food groups. Our Rooted in Reading book this week is The Salamander Room. We will be working on all sorts of reading, writing, grammar, and art activities around this book all week long. We are continuing to work on our PBL (project based learning) entitled Bats Around the World which is an project that hits multiple standards for English, Science, Social Studies, Art, and STEM.

Writing Assignment
This week’s writing prompt is: “If you could have any pet, what would you pick and why?”. Please have your child write 4-5 sentences and use their best handwriting on lined paper. Thank you.
In closing, please remember that students should be appropriately dressed for the weather and that ALL students need to have a water bottle to keep at school as we do not have cups to offer them should they be thirsty. If your child needs sunscreen, please apply it before they come to school. Just a refresher on our illness policy: If your child is sick, he or she must be fever free and free of vomiting for 24 hours before they may return to school. Thanks!
Have a great week!
Jenny
